Intent

At Coppice Academy, the intention of our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum is to develop an interest in and enthusiasm for learning other languages. We aim to introduce children to the Spanish language and develop their understanding of Spanish-speaking cultures in enjoyable, engaging and stimulating ways.

Our curriculum focuses on developing the four essential language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, providing children with the foundations needed for future language learning. We aim to broaden children's cultural capital by encouraging them to recognise and appreciate similarities and differences between cultures, fostering curiosity, respect and an understanding of the wider world.

At Coppice Academy, we are committed to ensuring that every pupil, regardless of ability, gender or socioeconomic background, has the opportunity to reach their individual potential as a language learner. This reflects our school motto, 'Inspiring Excellence'.

Implementation

Our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum is designed to progressively develop children's knowledge, understanding and skills in Spanish throughout Key Stage 2.

We use the Kapow Primary Spanish scheme to deliver engaging and carefully sequenced lessons each week. The scheme provides a structured approach to language learning, ensuring that children develop their vocabulary, pronunciation, grammatical understanding and conversational skills through a range of practical and interactive activities.

Learning is organised into progressive units, allowing children to revisit and build upon previously acquired knowledge and skills. Opportunities for speaking, listening, reading and writing are embedded throughout the curriculum, enabling pupils to develop confidence in communicating in Spanish.

Children are also introduced to the traditions, customs and cultures of Spanish-speaking countries, helping them develop a broader understanding of the world and an appreciation of cultural diversity.

Impact

At Coppice Academy, we aim for all children to develop the confidence, knowledge and skills needed to communicate in Spanish at an age-appropriate level. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils will have acquired a foundation of vocabulary, grammatical understanding and language-learning strategies that will support their transition to secondary education.

The impact of our MFL curriculum is regularly monitored and evaluated to ensure that all learners make progress. Teachers use ongoing formative assessment, including questioning, observations, conversations and evidence of learning, to identify children's strengths and areas for development.

Assessment opportunities within the Kapow Primary scheme support teachers in reviewing pupils' understanding and adapting future teaching to meet their needs.

Ultimately, we want children to leave Coppice Academy with a positive attitude towards learning languages, an appreciation of different cultures and the confidence to continue developing their language skills throughout their education and beyond.
